Product Design and Quality

Tascam DR-40X Review

Tascam DR-40X has a high sound pressure design to capture loud sounds of up to 125dB SPL. It has a built-in microphone with a twofold unidirectional stereo condenser scalable for A/B or X/Y recording. The recorder also has a built-in speaker with an output of 0.3W.  It has a peak reduction function to detect peaks and set the optimal level.

Using selectable modes like stereo safety track recording and peak reduction, you can adjust your recordings. The low-cut filter is designed to mitigate any external low-frequency noises. There is a level-align feature to limit the uneven sounds, and the equalizer setting adjusts playback sound quality. It has a tone Generator to synchronize files, which also acts as an auto-slate for video production.

It is designed in a way that it can be used by anyone without any external help. It has a self-timer recording and dictation mode designed towards human voice recording at command. Pre-recording buffer function allows waiting up to 2 seconds before starting recording.

However, in the case of pauses and delays, the delay compensation function eliminates any time lag. It also has an overwrite function for Punch-In recording that lets you Undo up to 1 time. The recorder also allows you to divide and delete recordings, adjust the speed and skip back a preset number of seconds. There are options for Loop and repeat playing as well.

A resume function retains the last stopping position and starts playback from that position when the device is turned back on.

A quick-menu button design enables easy access to all these various functions.

The device has stereo mini line output / Headphone output connectors. XLR/TRS Combo jack is used as Line In Connector, and a 3.5mm Stereo Mini-jack acts as Line Out Connector. It also supports 2in/ 2out USB Audio Interface and Micro B-type USB.

The body of the recorder is lightweight and durable, making it easy to carry around. Built-in rubber feet reducing the transfer of vibrations from a desktop or table to the microphones.

There is a tripod attachment screw-hole built into the device to mount it with your camera for video recording. You can also set the built-in mics to different angles.
